Seeing as that I am a Saudi Arabian descent and living in the United States, I have been exposed to many misunderstandings, stereotypes, and invalid generalizations about my culture. There have been many instances in which I encountered stereotypes, mostly presented to the American public through various media types, which have limited Americans from realizing or seeking to comprehend more about my culture and heritage. As Thomas Sowell points out â€Å"one of the obstacles to understanding what behavioral characteristics follow each group around the world is the widespread use of the term â€Å"stereotypes† to dismiss whatever observations or evidence may be cited as to distinguishing features of particular group behavior patterns. Because this conduct is in such sharp contrast with the United States’ attitude towards women and their more revealing attire, the media has hyped upon how these Saudi laws are examples of how Saudi women are submissive because they have neither stood upon for their rights, such as drive or dress as they desire, nor sought to have a voice in society. What we see instead is a strong familial structure with nepotism occurring in society (Lewis, 68-69) While it is true that such laws have led to women having no public role in their society because they are seemingly â€Å"protected† by their Saudi men, it is unfair to conclude that Saudi women have no rights or voice in society. Saudi women do indeed have rights such as being guaranteed certain shares in inheritance, are allowed to own property, are permitted to choose or refuse potential husbands, and are considered equal to men in the eyes of God (http://www. saudinf.com/main/h61. htm). Furthermore, many Saudi women come to the United States to better educate themselves and return to Saudi to seek employment as nurses, doctors, professionals, and teachers. Upon returning to Saudi they have a hand in better educating or helping the next generation of women seek out their own respective goals. Hence, while it is a valid generalization that Saudi does not promote a public scope or ideology for its women, it does instead enable women to better improve upon themselves and expect protection for Saudi men that women might not have in the states. Lastly, a large number of Saudi women have accepted the scope of their responsibilities as a maternal figure in their families and feel that they are submissive to their religion and rearing their children appropriately (http://www. saudinf. com/main/h62. htm). While in the United States, we are seeing that women are being forced to work and provide for their family units without choice, face a higher possibility of divorce, see that rape and sexual harassment statistics have increased, instances of teen pregnancies have rose, and lastly cases of broken homes have increased. From my experience, women’s liberation and freedom is coming at a high cost to society’s families and while the belief that women are submissive and lack a voice in Saudi might be true from some perspectives, it is obvious that in the United States this stereotype might actually be occurring due to jealousy perhaps on the part of women who do not have the luxury of selecting if they decide to seek employment or remain at home to raise their children (http://www. wrmea. com/archives/may-june01/0105035. html). Another emphatic belief that Americans seem to have about Saudis is that we are either fanatics, villains, or that we support terrorist activity in the name of religion. Obviously Saudi Arabia which houses the Kaaba, the cube figure which is the most sacred site in Islam, represents our religion and is the direction to which the 5 daily prayers are made. For Americans, the media has publicized how Saudi is the birthplace of fanatic behavior and dramatizes the pilgrimage made to the site as well as how Saudi men dress in the distinct head piece and robe. After September 11th, Americans became overwhelmed with even more media publicity about how the attackers were of Saudi descent and how Saudi wealth has indirectly added in efforts to attack Westerners, and other such activities. Prior to 9/11, Saudi was simply the land of oil and most Americans could not even find it on the globe! In our modern day world, the news, publications, and movies all instilled within Americans the belief that Saudis were temperamental, geared towards violence, and oil rich businessmen. In fact, comic often portrayed us as villains and school textbooks have been found to associate Islam with violence and intolerance. (http://www. adc. org/index. php? id=283). Due to its rich status, Saudi did not have strong external relationships which could overcome their stereotypes until recently. This belief is not a valid generalization by any means! It is far from the truth as Saudis have sought to limit the ultra conservative factions within their country because besides tarnishing its reputation in the world it also causes commotion and upheaval in Saudi Arabia as well. For Saudi, it is of utmost importance in its abroad relations to keep allies and businesses purchasing its oil and it can not afford to alienate its friends. As Saudi is the predominate supplier and largest producer of oil to countries abroad, Americans have the misconception that each Saudi family must contain their own personal oil well in their own backyard. This is a laughable belief, but it is not the first time I have experienced Americans believing it to be a valid one. In fact, the country produces an average of 10. 2 million bbl/d of total oil, comprising crude oil, and natural gas liquids. The belief that Saudi has individual oil wells in each individual property is preposterous. In conclusion, I would like to emphasis the significance of acknowledging that Saudi Arabia is seeking to better improve its external relationships with other countries and improve its global image. The leadership in Saudi has sought to control its ultra conservative factions which have impaired its ability to ensure peace and tranquility both within its borders as well as with out. Generally, the media has created an atmosphere of fear and ignorance about other cultures. This psychological manipulation of Americans has lead to further stereotypes which harm cultural diversity and understanding. Many communities have created outreach programs between different cultures in an effort to achieve better communication, understanding, tolerance, and acceptance. These efforts have enabled Americans to began to open the lines of communication and acquire a grasp that our differences are key to learning how to respect other cultures and not fall to misconceptions about other groups of people. Methods and materials: In this lab we used a spectrophotometer, a test tube filled with water to be used as a blank, six test tubes with different concentrations of salicylic acid ranging from 0 mg/dL to 5 mg/dL and one test tube with an unknown concentration of salicylic acid. We set the spectrophotometer to a wavelength of 540 nm. We adjusted the transmittance to 0%. Next we placed the test tube with the water into the spectrophotometer and adjusted the transmittance dial to 100%. We removed the test tube containing the water and replaced it with the first concentration of 0 mg/dL. We recorded the absorbance and repeated the test for a total of 5 readings. We did this for each concentration. We then calculated the average of each concentration’s absorbance readings and plotted the averages onto the graph. Once we had gathered the data for our known concentrations we then repeated the procedure for our unknown concentration. We again took the average and plotted that on the absorbance curve to determine the concentration of the unknown. Find out how the ACT could reflect the new Common Core standards, and how that will affect studying for the test. The Relationship Between the ACT and the Common Core This is whatACT, Inc. officially has to say about the Common Core: "Since ACT Aspire was under development prior to the release of the Common Core State Standards, ACT Aspire was not designed to directly measure progress toward those standards. However, since ACT data, empirical research, and subject matter expertise about what constitutes college and career readiness was lent to the Common Core development effort, significant overlap exists between the CCSS and the college and career readiness constructs that ACT Aspire and the ACT measure." Talk about dancing around the issue! According to this quote, the ACT is aligned to the Common Core standards since the CC standards were partially based on ACT's research about "college and career readiness." (Indeed, the ACT was part of the group who designed the Common Core.) So yes, the ACT is at least partially aligned to Common Core. So why not say so directly? It's because the ACT doesn’t want to say the Common Core was a big motivator for any test changes since the standards have been controversial.Since not everyone supports the Common Core, ACT Inc. can't be 100% behind it. Nonetheless, they still want the ACT to fit with the Common Core standards,which have been adopted by 44 states out of 50 and are a major part of the American education system. Though ACT, Inc. is hesitant to just say "the ACT is aligned with the Common Core," the end result is the same: the ACT at least partially reflects the Common Core standards. But what does that mean for the test itself? Are the Recent ACT Changes Common Core-Inspired? As you may know, the ACT has been undergoing some slight changes lately. The goal of these changes is to make the ACT more rigorous so it can better reflect "college and career readiness." College and career readiness is also a major goal of the Common Core. Since both the Common Core and the ACT have the same goal, it's not surprising some of the recent ACT changes seem to bring the test more in line with Common Core standards. What exactly are the changes to the ACT? The new essay might be the most dramatic change. The new essay is longer and focuses on evaluating evidence, rather than speaking from personal experience, which is a hallmark of Common Core English standards. Check out an example of an old and new essay prompt below to see what we mean: Prompt via Preparing for the ACT, 2013-14. Prompt via Preparing for the ACT, 2015-16. The first prompt simply required you to take a position on an issue and explain your position with reasons and examples. But the new prompt requires you to evaluate the three different perspectives, explain your own perspective, and also explain "the relationship between your perspective and those given." So you have to be much more aware of other points of view and be able to synthesize and explain them. This more complex essay task reflects the Common Core English standards, which require students to evaluate different perspectives and analyze them in writing. Aside from the new essay, there are a few other ACT changes. The science section has evolved – there are more multi-part questions and inferences you have to make from the data, which reflects the Common Core’s standards relating to data analysis. It’s worth nothing that the ACT Reading section has drawn from multiple disciplines for years – Literature, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science – which is a Common Core English standard. But ACT Reading sometimes has â€Å"compare two passages† questions now, which are more complex and relate to the Common Core’s goal to have students evaluate and compare evidence. The ACT Math and English sections, on the other hand, are pretty much the same. The ACT’s Math section still looks like old, pre-Common Core math. It still asks 60 questions in 60 minutes, allows you to use a calculator the whole time, and tests a wide variety of topics, from Pre-Algebra through Trigonometry. The English section still relies mainly on knowledge of grammar rules and English conventions, and is less concerned with the research, communication, and digital literacy skills that the Common Core emphasizes. In short, ACT English and Math have not changed to reflect the Common Core. So while the recent changes to the ACT do seem to mostly fit with Common Core standards, the changes aren’t overwhelming. Plenty of the test is still "pre-Common Core." ACT Aspire While the ACT hasn't changed dramatically, the old pre-ACT test, the Plan, morphed into something called Aspire. ACT Aspire was designed to be able to test the Common Core standards, unlike the ACT. However, I wouldn’t stress about this test – it’s given to measure your school’s progress. ACT Aspire will never be used for college admissions, and your score won't affect your grades. ACT Aspire uses a variety of question formats (like short answer, reorganizing a list, or selecting multiple answers) as opposed to just multiple choice, which is what the plain old ACT uses. Multiple question types is a feature of many other Common Core standardized tests, like PARCC and Smarter Balanced. Aspire is designed for yearly testing from third to tenth grade to show and monitor progress. This approach allows schools to get yearly check-ins on students' progress, which in turn allows them to see if they're meeting the Common Core yearly goals. Aspire also uses texts from a variety of sources and has many questions across the sections about analyzing data, which also fits under the Common Core standards. You can read more about Aspire and how it’s different from the ACT if your school is using it or you want to learn more about it. But again, we don't think you need to worry too much about Aspire. Even though it's aligned with Common Core, at the end of the day it's not a very important test for you. Advice if You're Taking the ACT Even though there are some Common Core-inspired changes on the ACT, you shouldn't overhaul your study plan because of that. You should just focus on studying for the ACT. There's no substitute for putting the time in. The ACT is still a multiple-choice test where your ability to time yourself carefully, use process of elimination, and understand the question will help you succeed. Common Core elements like being â€Å"digitally literate† or doing applied problem solving in math won't help you here. In fact, if anything, the fact that some elements of the ACT are aligned with Common Core could make the test a bit easier. If you're living in a Common Core state, you will be working on Common Core elements, like explicitly looking for evidence in your reading, in class. It is best fitted for hardworking individuals and those who can learn to sacrifice for a better tomorrow. This is because the owner can decide to plow back a large portion of the profits accrued over a period just to ensure that the business expands within a short period. As for partnerships, not all partners could be ready to make this sacrifice. It is easy to make decisions in sole proprietorship since opinions are sought before undertaking anything. Such structure protects a business from the weaknesses that are found in some form of partnerships with family businesses where decisions are emotionally driven instead of being driven by logic. Their name is â€Å"a reminder† since in earlier times, poets had to recall then recite events since the tales were not written down. The importance of memory and recognition is a central feature in Greek song culture. The film Chunhyang gives an insight to ancient Greek song culture. Although each of these stories is from a different culture, the themes and symbolism are the same and central in both cultures. Both of these tales sà ªmainà ´ in order to show the connection between lovers. The importance of recalling events is an integral aspect of Greek song culture. By watching the film Chunhyang, one can gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of metonymy. Metonymy is an expression by means of a connection. In the film, Chunhyang and Mongryong exchange gifts – Chunhyang gives him a jade ring and he gives her a mirror. These gifts are little memories of each other. The connection between two individuals is shown through sà ªma. The jade ring is one of the clearest symbols in the movie. Jade represents love in Eastern cultures. It is fitting that the ring is made from jade since the exchange of gifts is a symbol of the love they share for each other. In addition, jade was thought to preserve the body after death and could be found in the tombs of emperors. The jade ring given to Mongryong by Chunhyang is a sà ªma for both definitions of the word; it is a physical symbol of their trust and a physical representation of the tomb of a hero. Mongryong achieves his kleos by becoming a high ranking official and saving Chunhyang’s life. The mirror is another sà ªma. A mirror shows reflection and this reflection is of the memories that were shared between Chunhyang and Mongryong. A person can reflect on past events and build connections between places, objects, and people. The signs that people give to each other are important for recognition and building relationships The importance of sà ªma can be seen in the Odyssey as well: So you see I know all about this sign [sà ªma], and I desire to learn whether it is still there, or whether any one has been removing it by cutting down the olive tree at its roots.

1.1 Explain what is meant by * diversity * equality * inclusion Diversity means difference. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities and religious beliefs. Equality means treating everyone the same regardless of their individual differences. It is the discovery of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. Everyone has an equal right to be treated with dignity and respect. No one should be denied opportunities because of their race or ethnicity, their disability, their gender or sexual orientation, their age or religion. Inclusion means including people in a way that makes them feel appreciated and respected. Treating individuals fairly and respecting the differences between them makes it easier to include them. 1.2 Describe the potential effects of discrimination Discrimination is treating someone or a group of people in a different way to everyone else based on their individual differences. It involves the behavior towards a child or children such as excluding or restricting children from activities that other children are participating in. Discrimination happens when we fail to respect individuals and their choices. Discrimination affects everybody in different ways: Low self-esteem, depression, withdrawn behaviour, shyness, tearful, fearful etc. When someone is discriminated against, it can exclude them from friends, family, neighbours, and society in general. A child’s self-worth is reduced, as they feel isolated, and alone. Children’s & Young People’s Workforce (2010 page 21) states that â€Å"When children experience prejudiced attitudes, there is a danger of damage to their self-esteem and self-confidence†. Discrimination can limit a child’s right to achieve their potential and objectives, their right to learn, their right to succeed. The most common forms of discrimination are racial remarks, being insulted and being the butt of hurtful jokes. Discrimination, racism and harassment may have significant mental and physical health consequences such as frustration, stress, anxiety and depression. Effects of discrimination physically and emotionally: Depression Anger Low self-esteem Isolation Loss of confidence Low self-worth Feeling stressed or unable to cope Fear of rejection The long-term effects could include: Loss of motivation Missed opportunities that may affect the child’s experiences and development Limited access to services Mental illness caused by stress 1.3 Explain how inclusive practice promotes equality and supports diversity Inclusive practice is about the attitudes, approaches and approaches taken to ensure that people are not excluded or isolated. It means supporting diversity by accepting and welcoming children’s differences, and promoting equality by ensuring equal opportunities for all children. Child care workers show inclusive practice by working in ways that recognise, respect, value and make the most of all aspects of diversity. Children’s & Young People’s Workforce (2010 page 25) states that another type of inclusive practice is to â€Å"offer children equality of opportunity to  participate, develop and learn. This does not mean treating them all the same; we have to acknowledge their diversity and treat children as individuals, with equal concern†. Having a sound awareness of and responding sensitively to an individual’s diverse needs supports them in developing a sense of belonging, well-being and confidence in their identity and capabilities and it helps them to achieve their potential to take their place in society. In addition, inclusive practice involves having an understanding of the impact that discrimination, inequality and social exclusion can have on an individual’s physical and mental health. Having such an understanding ensures appropriate, personalised care and support, thereby enabling an individual to develop self-respect and maintain a valued role in society. Children’s & Young People’s Workforce (2010 page 20) states that â€Å"When children spend time in settings which promote diversity, equality of opportunity and inclusion, they are able to make progress in all areas of development†. Inclusive practice involves reflecting on and challenging one’s own prejudices, behaviours and work practices. It also involves challenging those of colleagues and other service providers with a view to changing ways of thinking and working and changing services to build on good practice and to better support diversity and promote equality. Americans Have the Right to Keep and Bear Arms Our rights as Americans started to take shape when the Constitution of the United States was drawn up by the delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. Three years later, a very important part of American history called the Bill of Rights was added. The Bill of Rights is looked upon and interpreted every day. It gives the citizens of the United States many of the rights and freedoms that we value today, and some of those are in jeopardy. One right that is at stake is our right to bear arms, which is addressed in the Second Amendment. Other countries around the world have also set examples by having gun laws. Guns are banned in the United Kingdom, and the crime rate has risen since that time (Smith 24). The other major problem with gun laws in the United States is that they are simply not being enforced (Smith 15). These facts and others involving the positive uses of guns are argued in court rooms and government offices around the country every day.
